A DRIVE FROM LPA

Gran Canaria Airport to Las Palmas by hire car

27 minutes from the airport.

THE JOURNEY

From the airport
by hire car.

Gran Canaria Airport to Las Palmas is 25.6 km by road, about 27 minutes by hire car without traffic, north on the GC-1 into the island's capital. The airport is 18 km south of the capital; by road to the city centre it is 25.6 km.

Las Palmas has no hire cars of its own to collect. A car for a stay in the city is collected in the arrivals area at Gran Canaria Airport and driven north, and it can be left in Las Palmas at the end on the cars that allow a one-way.

02

Is Las Palmas Airport the same as Gran Canaria Airport?

Yes. The airport's code, LPA, comes from Las Palmas, and it is also called Las Palmas Airport, but its official name is Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria and it stands in Telde and Ingenio, south of the city.

03

Which road into the city?

The GC-1, north from the airport. North of the airport junction it is a dual carriageway rather than a motorway, and inside the city limits a dual carriageway or motorway carries a general limit of 80 km/h unless signs say otherwise. Where a main road passes through a built-up area, the limit is 50 km/h.

The GC-3, the Las Palmas ring road, leaves the GC-1 at exit 4 and runs round the city to exit 8 of the GC-2 in Arucas; more than half of it is tunnels and viaducts. The GC-2 then carries on along the north coast towards Gáldar and Agaete. Parts of the GC-2 are two lanes each way with roundabouts and traffic lights rather than full motorway.

Where can I park in Las Palmas?

On-street parking in the city is run by SAGULPA in two kinds of zone. Blue zones are paid parking for anyone, with a maximum stay of two hours. Green zones are for registered residents first, and non-residents may use them under separate rules.

Blue zones run to five different timetables depending on the street, and since 4 April 2025 some blue streets in Alcaravaneras, Guanarteme and Triana are also charged from 14:00 to 16:00, so read the meter for the street you are on. The seafront Avenida Alcalde Ramírez Bethencourt has 340 blue spaces. The ticket, paper or electronic, must show the car's number plate.

SAGULPA's LPA Park app sells the same ticket on a phone at no extra cost, from a prepaid balance that is never refunded, and wardens check it by the number plate. Fines and parking charges are the driver's to pay; the insurance on a hire car does not cover them.

05

Is there a low emission zone in Las Palmas?

The city's first low emission zone is planned for the Alcaravaneras neighbourhood. As of April 2026 its operating hours were still to be set by a municipal ordinance, and the draft ordinance proposed a 200 euro fine for breaking its rules.

North and west on the GC-2. From Las Palmas, Arucas is 13.6 km and 15 minutes, Gáldar 29 minutes and Agaete 35 minutes, on a road that is two lanes each way with roundabouts in parts. Teror, inland at 543 m, is 31 minutes from Las Palmas.

07

Can I leave the hire car in Las Palmas?

Yes, as a drop-off. Las Palmas is one of the towns a car collected at the airport can be left in, on a one-way hire from Gran Canaria Airport, and the car is handed back at an address you give in the city, confirmed with the booking's support before you pay. It does not work the other way: no car can be collected in Las Palmas, so every hire for a stay in the city starts with a car booked at Gran Canaria Airport.

08

How long does the drive back to the airport take?

Coming back takes less time than going out: Las Palmas to Gran Canaria Airport is 25.7 km and 25 minutes without traffic, south on the GC-1 to exit 16. The car goes back with the fuel it had at collection, and the Repsol at km 16 of the GC-1, by the airport, is open 24 hours.
